Why Did MI5 Spies Watch Orwell For A Decade?

"This man has advanced communist views. . . he dresses in a bohemian fashion both at his office and in his leisure hours."

Well then. Don't let him out of your sight.

The interrogation files of suspected spies and German agents have also been released, including, in that of a Norwegian seaman, a copy of the Naturist magazine of March 1945 whose photographs of nude women and advertisements for breast enhancement and "the Vitaman iodised jockstrap" were combed to see whether they contained writing in invisible ink.

God Save The King.

Near as I can tell, "bohemian" dress back then was tweed, tweed, more tweed... and hatlessness. To me, it's heartbreaking that the Brit authorities of the day couldn't recognize a patriot like Eric Blair when they saw one, or even when they hired him. He was suspect 'cos of his clothes, his associations, and his poverty, it looks like; it must have suited certain Establishment paranoids to assume that everything Orwell actually and publicly said was likely to be a ruse. How un-English, how Stasi, how saddening; how good that Orwell's outlived the little creeps who spied on him.

Seeing as other agencies, like FBI, are of the same "mindset", I do not wonder that Osama BL is free to star in video clips for so long.
